Adult Acne: Why are You Still Getting Pimples in Your 30s?

Acne and pimples are never good news, not in your teens and certainly not when you are in your 30s! Everyone probably said that your skin would begin to clear up by the time you hit your early 20s, but what they didn’t tell you is that pimples often continue to make appearances on our faces even after we pass the teen years. This is the most dominant reason of them all and it had always been so when it comes to acne. Fluctuations in your androgen levels are what likely caused those spots to appear on your face during the teen years, and it’s very likely that similar fluctuations are also causing those spots to appear now.


Sugar boosts insulin and insulin boosts androgens (male hormones). As these hormones largely contribute to excess oil production on your face and back in particular, pimples appear as a final product of excess sugar consumption. Although the cortisol itself doesn’t contribute towards acne development in any way, each time it’s released, a small amount of excess androgenic hormones such as testosterone are also released into the body. As explained previously, this leads to excess oil production and eventually, spots!

Over Cleansing

Cleansing or exfoliating too much will irritate the skin and that may lead to the development of acne. To avoid aggravating your sensitive skin, make sure you are following the rules below:

  • Do not clean your face more than twice a day

  • Keep the exfoliation limited to a weekly activity

  • Make sure that your scrubber isn’t rough enough to cause tiny abrasions

  • Do not apply excessive pressure on your skin while cleaning your face or any other body part

  • Always remember to take off makeup thoroughly and gently
